El Vilsito (Best Tacos in Mexico City)

Updated: Jul 11, 2019

When I was in Durango I found the best coffee place ever. Republica Coffee Roasters - and I was pleasantly surprised to find a Canadian connection - their first location started in Fort Langley, B.C. All their beans are from Mexico and well, aside from being ultra cool characters they are bonafide coffee geeks. The Republica Coffee partners happened to be in Mexico City when I was there.

If you love really good coffee and tacos - there’s a good chance we are going to be friends.

They took me to El Vilsito in the Narvarte neighbourhood in Mexico City - it’s an auto repair shop by day and at night it turns into a taco stand serving up some of the best street tacos you'll ever come across.

As I walked in I was greeted to a scene of people licking their fingers and making tacogasm faces and there is a good reason for that. Everything here is freakin delicious. I mean everything.

The most important reason you come here - is for the tacos Al Pastor. By far the BEST tacos Al Pastor I’ve ever had in Mexico. I hate to choose favourites when it comes to tacos but really these tacos were truly memorable.

I could do taco Tuesday here everyday of the week.

You know a place is good for Tacos Al Pastor when you see their trompo get a lot of action.

Just when we were unbuttoning our pants and ready to call in the Krankenwagen to admit us to our comfortable sofas to recover from our tacocoma - we saw this guy taking the Al Pastor meat, putting it on the grill and grilling it with cheese (mmmm queso) - then placing this bundle of joy in a fresh roll laden with avocado - then he grills the sandwich or torta as they call it. It’s sliced in half and stares at you with those “eat me” eyes.

We had to do it. It changed our life.

You know something is good when you have no more room left in you but you pry open your hole to shove something else in because you know first thing in the morning when you get up, you’ll regret not doing it.

It’s rare for me to get excited about other items on the menu at a taqueria - I am sceptical when I see things like enchiladas, burritos, nachos - wait are there even nachos in Mexico? I didn’t see any but then again I wasn’t really looking for it. Here’s a tip - when you see people at a popular taqueria straying from tacos then you probably want to have what they’re having. When in Mexico, Mexican food from all walks of life is well, fucking delicious.
