Tacos EL Patan is like the guy you don’t want your parents to know you went out on a date with. It’s not in the best neighbourhood down in the Centro Histórico’s market district, you walk down a dark alley and the red hue from their canopy makes you feel like you’re in a seedy rub and tug. If you can get past all that, you will be rewarded with some of the best fish tacos in Mexico City.
On the grill, sealed in tin foil is a huge Mexican Sierra fish which is a relative to the Mackerel, basking in pico de gallo, chili oil and mayonnaise. They open the foil and you get a smell of this grilled fish and they flake off the fish and serve it on a warm flower tortilla.
The best part are the unexpected extras on the menu which is why we’re attracted to the bad boy type anyways. Here’s a tip - if you see anything that is not a taco being served at a taco stand - and it’s going out on tables - then you order it. Here it’s their prawn brochette and their prawn soup…which is nectar of the gods - and If you don’t like shrimp heads that’s ok we can still be friends because you can give me all yours.
When you’re in Mexico City, brave the walk down to tacos El Patan - during the day is the best time as you’ll see police almost on every corner, mind your belongings as you brush through the crowded streets of teddy bears and nicknacks and you’ll feel like a warrior when you find this place after your adventurous walk and treat yourself to one of the best fish tacos, brochette and soup and you’ll feel like you’re celebrating on a summit of a big mountain.
